Honey is a sweet, sticky liquid made by honeybees that has been used for culinary and cosmetic purposes for centuries. The colour, fragrance and properties of honey are determined by the source of the nectar; and when applied topically, honey also carries the medicinal properties of these plants and herbs onto the skin.

Description

Description

Our fairly traded, Zambian honey is sourced from wild bees, using traditional methods passed down throughout generations.

Bees create honey by carrying plant nectar back to their colony, injecting it with specialist enzymes and sealing it into their temperature-regulated hives. Nectar, which has a very high sugar content, is consequently transformed into a much thicker, durable foodstuff which will feed bees during the colder months.

Honey is a humectant, meaning it both attracts and retains moisture, and consequently is highly hydrating on the skin and gives shine and softness to the hair. It has renowned antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties which enable it to delicately but effectively cleanse the skin and scalp.

Because honey has a high sugar content combined with a very low pH and water content, it is inhospitable to microorganisms and can be used as a preservative. It draws water into sugar molecules leaving little for microbes to act on and can also be used to reduce the amount of overall water in a formula.
