Chelame is from the Philippines. She was a former shelter resident at HOME. The HOME Shelter provides a refuge and social support for domestic workers in Singapore who have suffered abuse or have been trafficked, and are in the process of seeking legal recourse or resolving disputes with their employers.
“I have quite a few hobbies, a few of which I picked up in Singapore. I sing – I love to sing. In fact, I started teaching myself to play the guitar last year, by watching YouTube tutorials, to accompany my singing.
I also love volleyball! I am part of a volleyball team here. I've made a lot of friends through this group. It's a diverse group, made of people from different backgrounds and nationalities. There are domestic workers and office workers, nurses and teachers.
We usually play against a Singaporean team. In Singapore, people sometimes look down on us because we are domestic workers. But on the volleyball court, we are all equals."
